Protecting the next generation.  18 classes conducted so far from 2025 to April 2026

In the quiet villages of Siem Reap, there’s an ongoing and invisible threat that’s on the doorsteps of it seems all, of our families. For generations, life was governed by the seasons and the simple exchange of goods. But today, the "modern world" arrives with a smile and a "magic wand"—smart salesmen and easy-access loans for phones, motor bikes, farm implements etc.

In a world where they have never managed a cash budget, the lure of an instant upgrade is powerful. But for many, that single thumbprint on a loan document doesn't just buy a motor bike; it risks the person or family's entire future.

The Empty Chairs at Home:  During the development of our new Money Management Course, Leng, Terry, and Trai Van uncovered a sobering truth: nearly every parent in our villages is carrying debt! When repayments lapse and interest spirals, the pressure becomes unbearable.

We see the fallout of this "Invisible Crisis" every day. In fact, many of the children living in our ODA boarding school are there because their parents had to "vanish"—fleeing their homes and families to escape the shadow of debt they couldn't repay. It is a heart breaking reason for a family to break apart.

A Sunday Revelation ODA knew we had to act. Leng, Terry and Trai Van, the ODA IT Manager, began by developing and testing our Money Management Course over last year.  Then we began by sitting down with our senior students at ODA Central to begin learning to budget and map out the simple cost of their future independence when they leave ODA for employment. We looked at the hard numbers: the cost of a rented room in town, food, fuel, and phone credit.

The silence in the room was deafening.

For all of these students, it was the first time they had ever seen a budget and the true cost of living written down on paper.

Encouraged by the resulting acceptance Trai Van pressed on to bring this knowledge to our village teachers and senior students.

To respect the heavy workload our students face on their family farms, we built in a $10 attendance incentive. This allowed them to prioritize the four-week course without causing financial strain at home.

They may have come for the $10, but they stayed because the "aha" moments were life-changing.

Backed up by the reality of them experiencing their older siblings or parents ‘trapped’ in loans they didn’t understand and can’t repay, and seeing collection day play out month after month in their, and other villagers homes.

They want another way.

The Revolutionary Act of Saving versus impulsive borrowing.  Our message is simple, yet in this environment, it is revolutionary:

Understand the lender, and save before you spend.

Trai Van showed the students the math—exactly how much of a monthly payment is swallowed by the lender and how little actually goes toward the loan itself.

They were stunned!

While many of our teachers are already unfortunately entangled in loans, still young themselves this course is their "food for thought" to make them wary of avoiding further traps. However for our Year 12s, the timing is perfect. They are entering the workforce late this year with a shield that their parents never had.

Building a Shield Against Poverty

Now with 18 classes already completed, and more scheduled every Sunday, through continuing these classes, we are giving these intelligent young villagers more than just a certificate. We are giving them the knowledge and power to say "no" to the debt trap and "yes" to a stable, independent life.

We are incredibly grateful to One Tomorrow (APT and Travel Marvel’s Charity arm) for their understanding of the critical need, and partnering with us to build this curriculum.

To all our supporters: thank you for your ongoing funding. You are helping us provide a widening shield of education so that our students can step into a future defined by knowledge, not by the shadows of debt."

From Boarding School to "Queen for a Day":

Sok Vun’s Full-Circle Journey

In Cambodia they are both thought of as King and Queen for the day.
In Cambodia they are both thought of as King and Queen for the day.

Nothing illustrates the impact of your support more beautifully than seeing one of our own "graduate" into a life of independence and joy. Recently, Leng, Sry On, two of their own daughters, and members of the ODA team travelled 3.5 hours to a remote village to celebrate a very special milestone: the wedding of Sok Vun.

A Legacy of Determination Sok Vun’s journey with us began 17 years ago when she was just 10 years old. Over the years, we watched her grow within our boarding school, working tirelessly to complete her education with high marks, and eventually earning her university degree. Many of you may remember her as the expert manager of the ODA Gallery, where she balanced her studies with dedicated support for our various ODA initiatives.

Today, she is a full-time government teacher—a role of great respect and influence. Yet, she continues to give back to the ODA family by teaching our advanced night classes, passing her knowledge on to the next generation of students.

Cutting Away the Past In the photo you will see a deeply moving moment: Leng performing the traditional hair-cutting ceremony. In Khmer culture, this is a beautiful symbol of cutting away the past to begin a new life together. On her wedding day, Sok Vun and her groom were "King and Queen," but for us, it was a moment of immense pride to see this young woman transition so successfully into her own bright future

Your Part in the Journey Leng, Sry On, and the entire ODA family join me in thanking you. When you support ODA, you are doing so much more than funding a classroom; helping us to educate on future employment opportunities, budgeting, funding rice for displaced border families, uniforms for poor kids to attend government school and much more, you are helping educate building careers, and breaking the cycle of poverty for good.

Thank you for playing such a vital role in Sok Vun’s transition—and in the lives of so many others like her under the ODA umbrellas.
